WASHINGTON -- A daily puff of a compound like marijuana, the plant blamed for ruining
potheads' recall, might help maintain memory in old age, researchers who tried it on
rats reported yesterday.

Elderly rats better remembered their way around a swimming pool and could find hidden
resting spots after Yannick Marchalant and his colleagues at Ohio State University gave
them a compound that mimics the effect of marijuana on the brain's cannabis receptors.
Other rats got placebos.

20 Nov 2008 - "Man sentenced on charges of growing marijuana, child endangerment "
A Happy Valley-Goose Bay man was sentenced Tuesday to a 14-month conditional
sentence in a marijuana-growing case that sparked the first-ever charge laid
for child endangerment under the Child Youth and Family Services Act in
relation to marijuana grows.

Corey Saunders, 34, appeared in provincial court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
Tuesday and pleaded guilty to four charges resulting from a RCMP
investigation into a marijuana grow operation in the community in November
2007.

Moncton - On Oct.10, 2007, the Moncton Drug Section successfully ended a year long drug investigation targeting an organized crime syndicate in the Bouctouche and Cocagne area. The investigation, Operation Jagged, led to the seizure of thousands of marijuana plants and several hundred pounds of cannabis marijuana which would have amounted to several hundred thousand marijuana joints. The raids were conducted in several communities, including Bouctouche, Cocagne, Saint-Maurice, Canaan Station and Harewood.

The RCMP Moncton Drug Section have charged several people in connection with the raids, including 25-year old Frederick Boudreau of , who was charged with with conspiracy to traffic cocaine in relation to a separate investigation stemming from Operation Jagged.

The accused are scheduled to appear at Moncton Provincial Court on Jan. 28, 2009 for election and plea. Operation Jagged was a joint forces operation which included RCMP Districts 4, 5, 11 and 12, as well as the Moncton Proceeds of Crime section and the J Division Coordinated Marihuana Enforcement Team.

19 Nov 2008 - "San Francisco Disputes Federal Pot Claims"
San Francisco, CA - San Francisco officials dispute U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy's claims the city has more medical marijuana outlets than Starbucks coffee shops.

The office said in a posting on its official blog, www.pushingback.com, that San Francisco is home to 98 medical marijuana dispensaries and only 71 Starbucks, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

However, San Francisco's Department of Public Health said only 24 marijuana outlets are registered in the city.

13 Nov 2008 - "Mass. voters OK decriminalization of marijuana."
(*This article is not local, but since we share a coastline, i thought it was worth mentioning -m.j)

Massachusetts voters today approved a ballot initiative to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, making getting caught with less than an ounce of pot punishable by a civil fine of $100. The change in the law means someone found carrying as many as dozens of marijuana cigarettes will no longer be reported to the state’s criminal history board.
